Outcome measures are tools that clinicians use to measure changes in people or communities that is attributable to an intervention or series of interventions.
In healthcare, outcome measures are important as they tell us many things about the person receiving treatment and also the service being provided. In a broad sense, they significantly improve health and the experience of receiving treatment and care.
Historically our case managers have used outcome measures with a focus on client performance; most commonly the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), Brain Injury Community Rehabilitation Outcome Scales (BICRO-39) and the Care and Needs Scale (CANS).
Since 2021, we have been implementing the TOM with all new clients referred to Ben Holden Ltd. The case manager will complete the TOM when completing the first assessment and then again at regular 3-month intervals.
The TOM has 4 key elements which are based on the World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Disability and Function (WHO, ICF, 2001).

In March 2024, 12 of our clinical staff underwent training regarding Outcomes Star which is an evidenced based tool for supporting and measuring change when working with people.
This will initially be mandatory for all CYP cases but will later be adopted by all our adult cases in due course.
